![]() I believe our purpose on Earth is to learn, (to forget), and to relearn, either preparing our spirits for a higher evolutionary plane, a better Next Life, or a reward in Heaven (whichever theory you subscribe to.)
It can be a challenge to maintain balance, focus, and purpose in this maelstrom of a world awash with issues, opposition, obstacles, and opinions all serving to separate and divide, alienate and disenfranchise us from any meaning we may glean from our existences. Why wax so philosophical, you ask? To justify Mom and Dad's expenditures in my education? To utilize my atrophied cerebral muscle? Ultimately, it is imperative to find meaning in one's work, endeavors, friendships, and relationships. In retrospect, finding meaning is a struggle I have had my whole life. Recently, it's come upon me clearly that part of my purpose, my meaning, my true vocation is food. The breaking of bread and the symbolism implied in the sharing of food and drink, both on conscious and unconscious levels, is paramount to my understanding of my work, hence myself. You are what you do. I feel lucky to enable people to soften their lives with a fine meal with fast friends, or to provide the catalyst for a lasting business relationship, or the backdrop for a romantic tryst. It helps to remember, in the heat of the moment, embroiled in sweat and flame with the impending threat of all the juggling balls, that we do give pleasure! We provide a desperately needed service, where people can share a meal, a table, conversation, and, ultimately, hopefully, a mutual understanding. Nothing serves to unite people, to gentle their attitudes, and heal their differences more than the sharing of a fine meal. Nothing compliments a chef better than wine-warmed smiles, lilting laughter, and sated spirits. Thank you for affording me the opportunity to serve you. When I take the time to reflect, it is to you I return. It is always you, my loyal friends, I have to thank, for the word-of-mouth, countless referrals, notes passed, ideas called in, and interest shown.
